Worldmade is a global programme to supply large numbers of appropriate wheelchairs, through a network of wheelchair services all over the developing world.

Worldmade wheelchairs are mass produced by a factory in eastern China. The parts for the wheelchairs are assembled into boxes, and then the boxes are packed into a shipping container

Worldmade is currently involved in:

  • Training courses - Local wheelchair service staff receive training in how to assess wheelchair users, prescribe an appropriate wheelchair and assemble the Worldmade wheelchairs.
  • Services - Motivation support local organisations to establish wheelchair services. Each wheelchair user is individually assessed for their wheelchair by the local service.
  • Products - There will be a range of wheelchairs available from Worldmade services. The first product in this range is a wheelchair for rural environments, this will be followed next year by a wheelchair for more urban areas. Every wheelchair has a pressure care cushion.

The demand for wheelchairs in developing countries is enormous.Worldmade supplies large numbers of appropriate wheelchairs through a network of wheelchair services all over the developing world. The wheelchairs are designed to be mass produced in one country and then assembled locally by trained technicians. This saves time and money because we are able to respond to the need for appropriate, high quality wheelchairs more quickly as it is more economical.

The Worldmade program is currently supported by a number of UK Trusts, Foundations and companies including the FourAcre Trust, the Diana Memorial Trust, Kingfisher and B&Q.

Worldmade was introduced to Sri Lanka in mid 2005. The first consignment of chairs was used for the ‘Fit for Life’ training workshop held in Colombo in June 2005. This program was for Motivation technical and clinical service teams in the region, and the workshop was meant to encourage the team to assess and fit appropriate wheelchairs and to build and alter chairs suitably and efficiently.

Worldmade chairs will be made available through our existing partner network and will serve as a product line extension to the existing product portfolio.
