Advocacy

Motivation is an active member of the steering committee of the Access for All campaign which is a group of local and international disability organisations pulling together to build an inclusive Sri Lanka for people with disabilities. The campaign covers avenues such as architectural access in public buildings and transport, equality in employment and education, suitable water and sanitation, and inclusion in disaster management and evacuation.

Advocacy activities consist of lobbying for enactment of legislation, accessibility issues and awareness campaigns. Accessibility Regulations drafted by the Ministry of Social Welfare have been handed over to legal draughtsman over two years ago. Many attempts have been made to hasten the procedure without much success. Reconstruction after the Tsunami made accessibility regulations more important. Lobbying continues through the National Council for people with disabilities (PWD’s) and through the Access for All campaign.

Many people who become disabled due to road traffic accidents are unaware of the procedure to obtain compensation. As a result of a proposal made to the National Council a poster has been designed giving information on claiming compensation. This poster will be displayed at police stations, hospitals and other relevant places for the information of victims of accidents in Sri Lanka.

We continue to improve capacity development of the Disability Organizations Joint Front (DOJF) and its member organisations . The aim is long term sustainability of the Advocacy Program after the DSP program ends. The Manager of Motivation’s Advocacy program, Squadron Leader Cyril Siriwardena is also the Secretary General of the DOJF.
Two DSP partner organisations SIA and Rehab Lanka are also members of DOJF.
