Peer Group Training

The secondary complication of a spinal cord injury kills hundreds of people each year in Sri Lanka. With the right knowledge, training and care the vast majority of these fatalities could be easily prevented. In this light Motivation empowers people with mobility disabilities to achieve physical and social rehabilitation through its peer group training camp. The camp is in collaboration with the Spinal Injuries Association (SIA), exposing wheelchair users to support, information, counselling and training to lead an independent life

Trained and guided by Motivation, trainers of the Spinal Injuries Association conduct Peer Group Training for those with mobility disabilities all around the island.

Trainers are wheelchair users themselves, and contribute much insight into the training program via their personal experience. They have themselves achieved a high degree of personal development, and work with other newer wheelchair users to help foster skills for daily living.

The issues addressed in peer group training include mobility skills, knowledge and understanding of disability, personal healthcare, sexuality and relationships, employment, education and understanding rights.

The provision of one to one counselling with trained counsellors is also provided at these training sessions.
